Signs That You May Be Dealing With A Failing Valve Cover Gasket Soon

Your valve cover gasket is nicely contained under the hood and near the center of your motor. In this sense, it is fairly protected from the elements. However, you don't want to take this too much for granted. Valve cover gaskets in general are still at risk of damage and replacing a valve cover gasket is a fairly common auto repair that many motorists find themselves dealing with at some point in their driving career. Therefore, you should learn about some of the warning signs that can indicate that your valve cover gasket may be in need of replacement soon. Here are some of the signs of possible valve cover damage:

Your motor is low on oil

It's important for you to make sure you check on all the fluids in your car on a regular basis. This way, you will have an increased chance of catching possible car troubles soon and hopefully before those troubles lead to problems in other areas of the motor. One of the fluids you want to be sure to check with the rest of them is the motor oil. Not only do you want to make sure it looks clean, but it's also important to make sure it falls somewhere between the low and full line. If the oil is suddenly low, then it may indicate that oil is leaking from the gasket.

You smell burning oil

If you do have oil leaking from the valve cover gasket, then the oil can end up dripping onto hot components in the car once the motor has been running. When the oil drips on hot motor parts, the result will be the strong smell of burning oil. Along with this smell, you may even see some smoke coming from under the hood, but this isn't always the case.

The valve cover is very dirty

You know that you can expect for your car's motor to be dirty, but there is also a point when it is obvious that there is too much dirt and grime that it's not of a normal amount. If you notice that your valve cover seems to be extremely grimy or if there is oil leaking from it, then this will let you know that the time has come for you to have the valve cover gasket replaced. Also, a leaking valve cover gasket can cause you to have oil splattered on the underside of your hood, right above the valve cover area.

Your engine starts running rough

If you all of a sudden are noticing that your engine is running rougher than normal or even backfires on you, then there is a good likeliness that you are having issues with your valve cover gasket leaking.
